Overview

We have selected what we consider the best of the best when it comes to getting out there and spending time in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountain National Parks. From the explosion of wildflowers in the spring, to the clear glacier views in the summer, to the brilliant golden of the larch trees in the fall, hiking in the Rockies should not be missed.

Our Interpretive Guides' priority is having a safe, fun and informative tour that connects you more to where you are visiting. We hike in small groups which is recommended for safety to reduce wildlife encounters. Hiking time is between four and six hours, which includes an alpine picnic lunch. Please note that you must have sturdy footwear and we recommend dressing in layers to adapt to constant weather changes.

This tour includes a shuttle from Calgary and will connect you with your guided hike tour in Banff.

Please note that tours starting from Calgary and Canmore consist of a guided tour plus a shared group shuttle to Banff. The shuttle picks up guests for all of our tours once each morning — around 6:00am from Calgary and 7:10am from Canmore — and you will change vehicles in Banff to meet your guide for the day. The return shared group shuttle departs Banff at around 6:30pm.

How long is the tour?+
The total trip time including shuttles is about 13 hours. Total hiking time can range between 3 to 5 hours on trail.
What does the tour include?+
The full day tour includes transportation from selected hotels in Calgary, a 3 – 5 hour hike with a professional hiking guide. Lunch and hiking poles are provided. Please select your preferred lunch choice when making your reservation.
Where is our pick up and drop off from?+
We pick up from selected hotels in Calgary. You can choose from the following options: Fairmont Palliser, Ford Tower, Harry Hayes Building - Loading Zone, The Westin Calgary Downtown, Acclaim Hotel by Clique Calgary Airport
Where are the hiking routes?+
There are four different guided hiking routes that run on various days throughout the week. Please see the ‘Trail Routes’ tab for further details. Please note that early season hikes, typically for the month of June, are subject to itinerary changes due to trail conditions. Please enquire when booking to confirm your hiking route.
What should I wear/bring?+
Please be prepared for the mountain weather, it changes quickly. To ensure that you enjoy the day, please read this guide on what to bring/wear. You may also like to bring snacks (to supplement lunch if required). Your guide will bring bear spray and a first aid kit, so you will not need to bring these items.
Is it safe? What about bears?+
These hikes are in small groups (up to 12 people per guide) and your trail guide will carry bear spray, and provide information on the best ways to travel safely, avoid a bear encounter and what to do in the unlikely event you should encounter a bear on the trail.
Should I tip my guide?+
Tips are not expected, but are certainly appreciated. If you think your guide did a wonderful job and would like to indicate that with a tip, it will be graciously accepted.
Is there one-way transportation from Calgary to Banff available?+
Guests departing from Calgary to Banff on the one way option will travel to Banff on a shared group shuttle. Upon arrival, you will change vehicles and meet your guide for the day. At the end of the tour, guests will be dropped off at their selected Banff hotel.
How does the Calgary return option work?+
Guests departing from Calgary will travel to Banff on a shared group shuttle. Upon arrival, you will change vehicles and meet your guide for the day. Some excursions include free time to explore Banff afterward. At 6:30 p.m., you will join the shared group shuttle back to Calgary.
Will I have free time in Banff before returning to Calgary?+
Guests booked on the return-to-Calgary option will have free time in Banff before returning to Calgary. This free time can be used to explore downtown Banff, enjoy a meal, browse local shops, or simply relax and take in the mountain scenery before your return shared group shuttle at 6:30pm.

  • The minimum age is 13 years.
  • All children aged 15 years and under must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
  • All adults must sign a waiver prior to the tour. A waiver must also be completed by the parent or legal guardian of any child under the age of 18 years.
  • Photo ID may be required for identity verification.
  • Early and late season itinerary changes may apply, please enquire at the time of booking.
  • Due to weather and trail restrictions, we reserve the right to change the location of any of our hikes for the safety of our customers.
  • By participating in a tour with Discover Banff Tours, guests are acknowledging that they understand that we may take video and photographs of them during their tour. These videos and photographs may be used in promotional materials including, but not limited to, social media.
