Overview

The exploration will include a stop at Maligne Canyon for a gentle guided walk to the first two bridges above the gorge, a short stop at the “disappearing” Medicine Lake, and finally Maligne Lake.

At this picturesque gem of the Canadian Rockies you can either relax aboard the famous Maligne Lake boat cruise to Spirit Island or enjoy a guided hike along the Mary Schaffer Loop (3.2km / 2mile – weather and trail conditions permitting).

The Maligne Valley Tour is mainly a nature, scenic, and geological voyage but it is also an excellent opportunity to see some of Jasper’s wildlife.

How long is the tour?+
The tour commences with pickups between 8:15am – 8:30am in Jasper, and is between 5.5 and 6 hours long.
What does the tour include?+
This tour includes pick up from most hotels in Jasper and a guided interpretive drive up the Maligne Valley with stops at Maligne Canyon, Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake. Guests can then choose between a Maligne Lake boat cruise to world famous Spirit Island or a guided hike along the Mary Schaffer Loop (3.2km / 2 mile – weather and trail conditions permitting).
Where is our pick up and drop off from?+
The tour will pick up from most hotels in Jasper, and you can select your preferred pick-up location during the booking process.
Is lunch included?+
Lunch or snacks are not included with this tour. Guests are welcome to bring their own, or there are two tea houses along the way, one at the canyon and one at the lake where guests are able to stop in to get snacks or a boxed lunch. Please note that boxed lunches are recommended for those doing the cruise as there will be no time for a sit down lunch.
How long is the hike at Maligne Lake? Is it hard?+
The Mary Schaffer Loop is 3.2 kms (2 miles) return, which takes around one hour. While there is little elevation gain, the trail head has an elevation of 1,670 metres and isn’t suitable for guests with asthma, hip replacements or with low fitness levels. Alternatively, guests can enjoy a boat cruise to world famous Spirit Island.
What does the cruise to Spirit Island include?+
The Maligne Lake Cruise is a 1.5 hour interpretive cruise to world-famous Spirit Island. Visitors can explore the lake from the comfort of glass-enclosed and heated cruise boats while a knowledgeable guide retells Maligne’s history and explains its geology, wildlife, weather, flora and fauna. Upon arrival at Spirit Island, the boat docks and guests are able to disembark and enjoy a short nature trail leading to a viewing platform for that bucket list photo overlooking Spirit Island. Please note that to preserve the area in its natural state, walking onto the island is not permitted.
What is the cancellation policy?+
There is a 24 hour cancellation policy, which allows you to change, cancel, or refund your booking up to 24 hours prior to your tour (or up to 7 days prior for group bookings).
Should I tip my guide?+
Tips are not expected, but are certainly appreciated. If you think your guide did a wonderful job and would like to indicate that with a tip, it will be graciously accepted.
