Johnston Canyon after dark
Evening Icewalk Series
Three new ways to see Johnston Canyon’s frozen waterfalls at night. Pick a date and we’ll show you the walks running that evening.

Full moon nights & moon stories
Johnston Canyon Evening Icewalk®: Moonlight Series
Let the moon reveal a different side of Johnston Canyon. Our Moonlight Series celebrates the nights around the full moon, when its glow can illuminate the snow and ice and transform the winter landscape. Along the way, your guide will share stories behind seasonal moon names, including the Wolf Moon and Worm Moon, and explore how the moon’s changing phases shape our experience of the night.
As you journey to the lower falls, pause to let your eyes adjust and appreciate the natural light of the moon when conditions allow. Look for its silver glow on the canyon walls, shadows stretching across the snow, and ice catching the light. These moments invite you to slow down and experience the canyon through the changing interplay of moonlight and darkness.
Enjoy a hot drink and a Nanaimo bar as your guide continues the moon stories, a warm finish to an evening centred on our closest celestial neighbour.

New moon nights & mountain tales
Johnston Canyon Evening Icewalk®: Rugged Dark Sky Series
Darkness brings a sense of mystery to the mountains. Running on select dates around the new moon, our Rugged Dark Sky Series embraces nights with minimal moonlight, inviting you to experience Johnston Canyon’s winter wilderness through heightened senses, local folklore, and stories of survival.
Stop at Hillsdale Meadow, take in the open sky and observe the stars, with opportunities to identify constellations when visibility allows.
Journey to the lower falls as your guide reveals how wildlife endures the cold and navigates life after dark. Pause with reduced artificial light, let your eyes adjust, and listen closely to the winter forest. These darker nights offer a chance to discover how much you can sense beyond what you can see.
Warm up with a hot drink and a savoury Canadian snack as mountain tales bring the surrounding wilderness to life. For those drawn to wild places and atmospheric storytelling, this limited-date experience offers an evening of curiosity and adventure in the Rockies after dark.
