If you've been dreaming of a winter day in the Canadian Rockies but don't want to share a bus with strangers, fight for parking on icy mountain roads, or follow someone else's schedule, a private tour is what you're looking for.
This is how it works. You tell us who's in your group, where you're staying, and what you want to see. We build the day around you, assign one of our expert local guides, and handle everything else. No logistics, no stress, no compromises.
Why choose a private tour over a public tour?
Group tours are a great option for a lot of travellers. But private tours are a different experience entirely — and for many guests, once they've done one, they don't go back.
1. The itinerary is yours
Want to spend an extra hour at Lake Louise? Done. Want to skip a stop and add somewhere else? No problem. Travelling with someone who has mobility considerations? We plan around that from the start. On a group tour, the schedule is fixed. On a private tour, it flexes around you.
2. The vehicle is yours
No waiting for other passengers. No sharing space with people you've never met. Your group has the vehicle — and the guide — to yourselves for the entire day.
3. The guide is fully focused on your group
Our guides are certified, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the Rockies. On a private tour, every story, every wildlife sighting, every photo stop is for your group — not divided across 20 other guests.
4. You set the pace
Some groups want to move efficiently. Others want to linger. Private tours accommodate both, and everything in between. You're not watching the clock for a departure time that works for everyone else.
Private Winter Itinerary tested by Joe (Calgary to Columbia Parkway)
The itinerary below is a real example of what we put together for one of our guests, Joe, who wanted a full winter day from Calgary through Banff National Park all the way to Peyto Lake on the Icefields Parkway. It was his birthday, so we wanted to show him the best of our local offers. The itinerary below is one of our favourite winter routes, and it's a great starting point if you're not sure where to begin.
Joe's Private Winter Tour — Discover Banff Tours Joe's Private Winter ItineraryEight stops, one unforgettable day
Joe came to us with a clear vision: one full winter day in the Rockies to see the Icefields Parkway, no rushed stops, a good balance of adventure and sightseeing. We paired him with Chloe — one of our certified local guides — and let the mountains do the rest. Here's exactly how his day unfolded.
Calgary Pickup
Chloe picked Joe with his partner up from Hampton Inn by Hilton Calgary Downtown in a modern, comfortable SUV before the city had fully woken up. From the first few minutes on the road, Joe said it already felt different — more like heading out with a friend who happens to know everything about where she lives. The drive west on the Trans-Canada set the tone: foothills giving way to rock, the first light catching the summit of Mount Rundle as Banff came into view.
⏱ Early morning departure — timing set around Joe's scheduleWild Flour Bakery, Banff
Chloe's first order of business was breakfast — and she brought Joe straight to Wild Flour Bakery on Bear Street, her go-to morning stop. Freshly baked sourdough sandwiches, almond croissants, and great coffee. The kind of place that earns its reputation entirely through what comes out of the oven. The right fuel for everything that came next.
📍 211 Bear St, Banff · Open from 7 AMCastle Mountain Viewpoint
Chloe took the Bow Valley Parkway — quieter than the Trans-Canada and far more rewarding. She pulled over at the Castle Mountain viewpoint as the morning light settled into the valley, and Joe stepped out into a scene that stopped him mid-sentence. The cliff faces of Castle Mountain rise over 9,000 feet in stacked limestone tiers above the frozen Bow River. In winter, with snow on every ledge and the valley completely still, it's the kind of view that resets your sense of scale.
📍 Banff-Windermere Hwy, Banff National ParkMorant's Curve
Chloe had checked the weather the day before the tour and decided to add Morant's Curve to the itinerary — that's the kind of detail that separates a good guide from a great one. The CPR tracks sweep in a long arc along the Bow River, framed by dark spruce forest and the peaks of the Slate Range. Nicholas Morant made this view famous in the 1940s, and Joe had to agree: it's every bit as spectacular as its reputation.
📍 Highway 1A, near Lake LouiseLake Louise
Chloe walked Joe and his partner out onto the frozen lake — something most summer visitors never get to do. Victoria Glacier hung at the far end of the valley in full, unobstructed view. The crowds that define Lake Louise in July were entirely absent. Chloe pointed out the avalanche paths on the headwall, the ice climbing routes in the couloirs above, and the history of the Victorian mountaineers who first explored these shores in the 1890s. Joe said he could have stayed all morning.
📍 Lake Louise, AB — free access year-roundIn winter, Lake Louise gives you everything and asks almost nothing in return. The crowds are gone. The ice is perfect. You can actually hear the mountains.
— Chloe, Certified Guide · Discover Banff ToursMaple Taffy at Bow Lake
Continuing north on the Icefields Parkway, Chloe pulled over at Bow Lake — serene, wide-open, and far less visited than Louise, with Crowfoot Glacier watching from the far shore. Then she introduced Joe to a Canadian winter tradition he hadn't seen coming: hot maple syrup poured directly onto packed snow, setting in seconds into a sweet, chewy taffy he rolled onto a wooden stick and ate on the spot.
📍 Bow Lake, Icefields ParkwaySnowshoe to Peyto Lake
This was the moment Chloe had been building toward all day. She fitted Joe and his partner with snowshoes at the trailhead and led him through old-growth spruce forest on a winter route that bypasses the summer crowds entirely. The trail is quiet in a way that feels absolute — just the crunch of snowshoes and the trees closing in around you. Then the forest opens up and Peyto Lake appears below: wolf-head shaped, suspended in a bowl of white peaks, the water still electric turquoise under a winter sky. Joe went completely silent. Chloe says it happens every single time.
📍 Peyto Lake, Icefields Parkway 🥾 Moderate snowshoe trail · All equipment provided ★★★★★"I just wanted to say that the tour was absolutely incredible — it was the highlight of my trip. Chloe was outstanding. She has the perfect personality for a local guide: so informative, fun, and easy to connect with. We were laughing the entire day, and it genuinely felt like we were just spending time with a friend. Everything about the experience felt so natural and seamless. I would absolutely love to come back, possibly during the summer, to experience the Rockies in a completely different season."
— Joe, Private Winter Tour guestRide Back to Calgary
Chloe had hot chocolate ready for the drive back. The mountains shrank in the rear window. Joe was quiet for most of the return — not because the day had been tiring, but because Peyto Lake tends to do that to people. Chloe knows the feeling well. The Icefields Parkway in winter has a way of staying with you long after you've left it behind.

Common QuestionsFrequently asked questions
Can we customise this itinerary?
Absolutely. Joe's route is a great starting point, but we can adjust any stop, change the pacing, add locations, or extend the tour into a second day toward Jasper. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll build around it.
Can we be picked up from Banff or Canmore instead of Calgary?
Yes. Just let us know your location when you enquire and we'll sort the logistics.
What if the weather is bad?
Winter in the Rockies is variable — and often spectacular because of it. Your guide monitors road and trail conditions daily and adjusts the route where necessary. Snow and cold don't cancel the tour; they make most of the stops more dramatic, not less.
Do we need snowshoe experience?
No. Your guide provides all equipment and a full briefing at the trailhead. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes. The snowshoe trail works well for older children, and the rest of the day is vehicle-based. Contact us if you have specific questions about your group's ages or abilities.
